Wilson Method Instruction Near Westmont
The Wilson Reading System (WRS) is a research-based, structured literacy program, particularly effective for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities. It employs a multisensory approach, focusing on explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, and other foundational skills, all within a sequential and cumulative framework.
Key Features of the Wilson Reading System:
Multisensory Instruction: WRS utilizes visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile activities to help students make connections between sounds and letters.
Explicit and Systematic Instruction: The program provides direct, structured lessons that teach the underlying structure of the English language.
Phoneme Segmentation and Blending: Students learn to break down words into individual sounds (phonemes) and blend them back together to read and spell.
Sequential and Cumulative: The program progresses through a series of steps, with each step building upon the previous one.
Controlled Text: WRS provides extensive, decodable text (word lists, sentences, stories) to reinforce learned skills.
Explicit Decoding and Encoding: Students are taught how to decode (read) and encode (spell) words.
Focus on Fluency and Comprehension: WRS incorporates strategies to improve reading fluency and comprehension.
